The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) is seeking an experienced and inspiring Engineering Manager – Materials Technology to lead our Materials Technology Department within the Technology Group. This is a senior leadership role based at our Coventry campus, responsible for translating the strategic vision of the Component Manufacturing Group into effective departmental delivery. As the job description notes, the Engineering Manager “plays a pivotal role in translating the Component Manufacturing Group’s strategic vision into departmental execution,” ensuring that engineering excellence, innovation, and capability growth remain at the forefront of our work.
In this role, you will lead a team of around 30 engineers, overseeing day‑to‑day operations while shaping and delivering the department’s long‑term technology strategy. You will ensure that departmental goals align with MTC’s five‑year plan, champion high standards of health, safety, and environmental performance, and drive continuous improvement through clear KPIs and robust governance. The role requires a strong grounding in Materials Technology or Engineering, ideally with experience in advanced material processing such as metallics or sustainable materials, as highlighted in the person specification.
You will be accountable for ensuring high‑quality engineering delivery across a diverse portfolio of projects, maintaining consistent engineering practices, and ensuring compliance with internal and external standards. The job description emphasises the need to “oversee engineering project delivery ensuring QCD targets” and to implement strong technical governance frameworks. Your leadership will help maintain MTC’s reputation for engineering excellence across multiple sectors.
People leadership is central to this role. You will manage recruitment, onboarding, development, and succession planning, while fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and psychologically safe team culture. The document highlights the importance of “promoting a culture of continuous professional development and learning” and providing inspirational leadership that supports both individual and team growth. You will champion the 70:20:10 learning model, support capability development, and ensure that engineers have clear pathways for progression.
Innovation is a key part of the department’s identity, and you will play a leading role in shaping new technical offerings, developing R&D proposals, and driving capability growth through the Catapult network. You will monitor emerging technologies, maintain strong relationships across industry, academia, and government, and ensure that the department remains at the forefront of materials innovation. As stated in the responsibilities, you will “foster a culture of continuous innovation and proactive improvement” while ensuring alignment with market needs.
The role also carries significant financial and risk management responsibility. You will manage a departmental budget of approximately £2M, lead financial forecasting, and implement cost‑optimisation strategies without compromising quality. You will oversee risk management processes and ensure that capital investments and infrastructure plans are delivered effectively, as outlined in the appendix.
This is an exceptional opportunity for a strategic, people‑focused engineering leader who is passionate about materials technology and motivated by MTC’s mission to deliver engineering excellence and positive societal impact. If you are a resilient, collaborative leader with strong technical expertise and a commitment to innovation, we would be delighted to hear from you.
