The role

 

This role will sit within the Additive Manufacturing department, reporting to the Metal AM team lead. This role delivers key responsibilities within the Additive Manufacturing department, supporting technical project proposal and delivery, contribution towards technology strategy, and leadership of a team of high performing engineers.

 

This role will be expected to contribute towards the MTCs metal AM technology strategy, capital investment decisions, technical business development and, proposal of new project work. It is also expected that the successful candidate will support and coaching and mentoring of the wider technical team to support their personal development and development of skills within the AM team and wider MTC.

 

This role requires an individual who is self-motivated, an excellent communicator and able to effectively manage their time. The successful candidate will be comfortable working in a dynamic research environment and able to work well and integrate with others with different background and skills. They will be expected to grow their network of influence to broaden the value and impact of AM both internally and externally to the MTC.

 

The successful candidate may be expected to take on leadership and management of a team of engineers (6-8 people), providing technical oversight where suitable, and coaching and mentoring activities to further engineers’ development, facilitating the creation of development objectives and goals aligned to individuals’ personal development plans.

 

This role may engage with project activities in the Defence sector in the future and therefore, candidates should be willing and able to engage in work in this area.

 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Technical leadership and responsibility for a mixed portfolio of projects, leading the supply of technical deliverables with support from the wider project delivery team, where required; ensuring work meets or exceeds agreed customer requirements, within agreed budgets and timescales and, to a high level of quality.
  • Proposing and undertaking innovative Engineering research work focused primarily on technology/manufacturing readiness levels (TRL/MRL) 3+, and able to demonstrate industrial project delivery.
  • Build close working relationships with customer, supporting the growth of the AM team's customer and project portfolio through proposal writing, bid development and customer networking/engagement.
  • Possible leadership of a team of engineers, actively supporting their wellbeing and professional development through project delivery and dedicated coaching and mentoring activities, enabling the growth of abundance of key technical skills within the wider AM team.

 

 

Person Specification

 

Essential Skills/Qualifications/Experience

  • Significant technical background and experience in ‘Metal laser powder bed fusion AM’ and associated process chain.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of AM process and/or materials qualification
  • Evidence of having regularly applied the above skills to lead and deliver medium to large scale technical projects.
  • Leadership/management of small engineering teams.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal teams, industrial clients, and academic collaborators.

 

Desirable Skills/Qualifications/Experience

  • Other AM technologies across metals, polymer and/or ceramics
  • Metallurgy as it relates to AM
  • Application of feedstock characterisation and mechanical testing methods for material evaluation
  • Surface finishing/post processing of AM components.
  • In-process monitoring technologies applied to LPBF AM
  • Use of large data sets and AL/machine learning tools for optimisation/prediction of AM part quality.  
  • Chartership status with relevant engineering institute or organisation
